The Web has become interactive, automated and more and more a place where people turn to find information fast.   In the past, websites were maintained by teams of web developers, looking after pages and pages of content – but times have changed.  The vast amount of information that is needed by most new websites: news, weather, shopping and advertisements – all has to be automatically generated.  It would be an extremely labour intensive task to produce manually.

Data driven websites, such as a cinema booking system, an e-commerce online shop or a content management system are websites that store information on a back-end database.  Pages are dynamically created when requested by a web browser.  Data driven websites usually have secure areas, which mean users have to login with a user ID and password. It is much more complex to build a data driven website than a static website or a web application that doesn't require a database such as a news aggregator website.
